Liposuction can be performed on the thighs, buttocks, abdomen, hips, upper arms and even under the chin. The aim is to produce a more defined shape and more balanced proportions, but it is not necessarily ideal for everyone. Mr Nigel Horlock will assess the amount of excess fat and skin laxity.
+ What is liposuction?
Liposuction has been a popular cosmetic surgery procedure for many decades and technical advances in recent years have meant less bruising and a quicker recovery. It is a popular treatment for both men and women, removing stubborn pockets of fat.
Prior to the treatment, the areas of the body being targeted by liposuction will be marked. Small incisions will then be made in the targeted areas, before a mixture of adrenaline and local anaesthetic is injected. A slim tube, or cannula, attached to a vacuum is inserted; Mr Horlock will move around the tube to loosen up the fat deposits which are removed by the vacuum.
Liposuction is not a treatment for significant weight loss, but focuses more on body contouring. This means, it removes small areas of fat from around the body and is not suitable for those who are generally obese. If you do use it as a weight loss tool without altering your lifestyle, you may require an additional procedure in the future.
+ Am I a good candidate for liposuction?
Liposuction is best suited to those who are at or near their ideal body weight with stubborn pockets of fat. If you have tried to eliminate the fat through diet and exercise but it hasn’t helped, liposuction is an ideal solution.
The procedure can be carried out on both men and women and best results are achieved by those in generally good health.
Skin laxity is also an important factor; if skin elasticity is poor then you may require liposuction combined with a surgical procedure to remove excess skin.
+ What can I expect from the recovery?
You may experience some discomfort for a few days after the procedure. It is advisable to remain as mobile as possible during this time.
You will need to avoid having a shower for 48 hours, in which time you can also reapply the compression garment. Most patients return to work two weeks after the procedure, though heavy manual work and sports should be avoided for four to six weeks.
The full results of the procedure will be revealed after three to six months. This is when any swelling and bruising should have fully disappeared.
+ Are there any possible risks or complications from liposuction?
Like any surgical procedure, there are some risks and complications associated with liposuction. These will be discussed with you during your consultation. While complications are rare with this procedure, the most common include:
Mr Horlock will tailor the liposuction procedure to fit your individual needs. This, alongside his extensive experience, reduces the risks of complications. Any discomfort you do feel can be eliminated with pain medication. You will also be given detailed aftercare instructions to reduce the likelihood of developing complications during the recovery period.
