ARM LIFT
Over time, genetics, weight loss and gravity can all lead to changes in the upper arm. Often referred to as ‘bingo wings’, it can be difficult to tone and shape this area of the body with diet and exercise alone.

If you are struggling to tone up your upper arm area, an arm lift could be an effective option. Also known as a brachioplasty, the procedure removes small sections of fat, skin and tissue to create a smoother and tighter look.
Discover more about this popular procedure below to decide whether it could be right for you.
+ What is an arm lift?
An arm lift aims to remove excess skin or tissue in order to improve the appearance of the upper arm. To achieve best results, it often combines liposuction with the surgical removal of tissue or skin.
The procedure will be carried out under general anaesthetic. Prior to the operation, your arms will be marked to ensure that the scar left behind will be hidden within the inner arm. If you are having liposuction alongside the arm lift, this will be carried out first. Then the arm lift will be performed, eliminating the skin and tissue where needed.
The scar will be secured with absorbable sutures before padding is placed over it. All patients will wear elastic compression garments and drains may be required in case of excess liquids.
The entire procedure takes around two hours and is performed as a day case.
+ Am I an ideal candidate for an arm lift?
An arm lift can be carried out on both male and female patients. It is best suited to those with excess skin hanging down from the upper arm when elevated. This excess skin can cause issues when wearing certain types of clothing, as well as create an unsightly appearance.
Those who have lost a lot of weight and have been left with hanging skin, tend to be the best candidates for the procedure. It is best to be near or at your ideal body weight as further weight fluctuations could impair your results.
+ What results can I expect from an arm lift?
Arm lifts have proven to be extremely effective at removing excess skin and improving the overall appearance of the upper arm. Results can last a lifetime, though if you gain a lot of weight there is a chance you will be left with the same issue you had prior to the surgery.
For this reason, it is important to ensure you maintain a healthy diet and exercise regime after the procedure.
+ What can I expect from recovery?
You will typically be allowed to go home the same day as the procedure. You are encouraged to remain mobile after the surgery, though you may experience some discomfort which could prove limiting.
A compression garment will be worn for up to six weeks, helping to minimise the swelling and discomfort. You will need to take around two to four weeks off from work and driving and you can return to gentle exercise after six weeks. Contact sports should be avoided for at least three months.
+ Are there any risks and complications?
There are a few risks and complications associated with arm lift procedures. In particular, studies have shown that patients who are overweight, smoke, have Diabetes or who are on hormone replacement therapy, are at the highest risk of complications. However, precautions will be taken to minimise the risks.
The main risks associated with an arm lift include minor wound infections, bleeding, discomfort and swelling. Scarring and asymmetry are often the chief concern when undergoing an arm lift. There will be some degree of sensory change or numbness around the scars. Mr Nigel Horlock combines surgical experience and careful planning to produce a symmetrical result and to position the scar as discreetly as possible.
