A labial reduction aims to reduce the size of the labia minora, the inner tissue within the genitalia. It creates a smoother appearance with the outer part of the genitalia, the labia majora.
Depending upon patient preference, a number of different techniques can be used. Most procedures are carried out as a day procedure and can be done either with local or general anaesthetic.
The two main types of procedure used include the trim and wedge methods. The trim technique is the one traditionally used, and it involves trimming off excess areas of the labia minora. The wedge method includes removing a wedge with partial thickness from the labia minora. The surgeon will ensure the layer of tissue located below the mucous membrane remains intact. This creates a natural appearance after the procedure.
The exact method being used will be discussed with you during the consultation. Mr Horlock prefers to carry out the technique in which a segment of tissue is removed before the tissue is stitched up. This tends to reduce scarring and provides the fastest recovery.
The procedure itself takes around one hour to complete.
