Whether you have naturally smaller breasts, or whether you have lost volume due to the natural ageing process, pregnancy or weight loss, a breast augmentation can help to greatly increase the size of the breasts. It is a straightforward procedure and can produce natural-looking results.
Prior to deciding to undergo breast augmentation, it is important to understand the procedure. Here, you will find a brief overview of what breast augmentation is and what you can expect if you undergo the procedure.
+ What is breast augmentation?
There are several considerations when planning your breast augmentation. To determine which approach is right for you, a physical examination will be required. Mr Horlock will need to determine whether there is any laxity or drooping in the breasts, as well as discuss your expectations. You will also talk through your preferences in terms of size, implant position and shape.
Incisions are typically made in the inframammary fold where scars will be well hidden when healed. The implants will then either be inserted above or below the breast muscle.
The procedure takes around one to two hours and absorbable sutures will be used to close the incisions. Mr Horlock uses implants by Johnson and Johnson, as well as Allergan. Both are superior quality brands renowned for their safety.
+ Am I an ideal candidate?
Most women are ideal candidates for breast augmentation. However, if there is a degree of breast ptosis, a breast uplift could be a more appropriate procedure. Breast augmentation is best suited to those looking to solely increase the size, volume and shape of the breasts.
The procedure is also ideal for those who have breastfed their children, which can leave the breasts becoming deflated. If this is the reason behind undergoing the surgery, you may also benefit from a combined breast uplift and augmentation procedure.
+ What is the recovery like after a breast augmentation?
You will usually be able to return home the same day, and you may experience some level of pain for a few days after the surgery. You will be provided with pain relief and required to come back into the clinic after one week to check the wound.
Most patients will need to take one to two weeks off work and avoid strenuous activity for six weeks. The results will fully show after three to six months, although you will be able to see significant improvement immediately.
+ Will I need to have my breast implants replaced at some point?
The average lifespan of breast implants is 10 to 15 years, although some women experience no issues with their implants and do not require them being replaced at this point. However, you may wish to replace your implants, as further changes to the appearance of the breasts can occur due to pregnancy or weight gain and loss, or you may decide you wish to have smaller or bigger implants at a later stage.
Some women decide to have their implants removed completely and there are a number of options at this point. Mr Nigel Horlock can reshape the existing breast tissue or perform a fat transfer to increase volume.
+ What are the risks and complications of a breast enhancement procedure?
Breast augmentation surgery is considered one of the safest cosmetic surgery procedures. That being said, there are some risks and complications you should be aware of. These include:
Mr Horlock will explain these risks and complications during your consultation. He will also advise you on how to minimise the risks. In a small number of cases, a revision surgery may be required to correct any potential complications.
Many patients are often concerned about the safety of implants and Mr Nigel Horlock can discuss your concerns in full before you make the decision to proceed.
