For many women, breast reduction surgery can be a life-changing procedure. Excessively large breasts can cause a range of problems including back pain and limiting daily activities or exercising.
Many women can also find larger breasts are a cause of embarrassment, preventing them from wearing certain types of clothing.
Here, you will discover more about this popular and straightforward procedure in order to determine whether or not it is right for you.
+ What is a breast reduction?
A breast reduction is carried out under general anaesthetic and you will typically need to stay in hospital overnight. It involves removing excess fat, skin and tissue, alongside reshaping the breast.
Unlike a breast augmentation, this procedure is much more extensive, and the nipple is also commonly repositioned. The exact technique used will vary depending upon the amount of breast tissue to be removed. Typically, an incision is made around the nipple and then a further incision is made from the nipple to the base of the breast and along the inframammary fold.
The procedure takes around two to three hours to perform. After the procedure, it is advised you wear a surgical compression bra to protect the scars and support the breasts as they heal.
+ Am I an ideal candidate?
You are an ideal candidate for breast reduction surgery if you are experiencing any issues associated with larger breasts. If your breasts enlarged after childbirth you may also be a good candidate for the procedure. No breasts are too large to reduce and for best results, you should be generally healthy.
+ What is the recovery like after a breast reduction?
After the breast reduction, Mr Horlock will check to ensure that you are comfortable and there is no bleeding. You may be able to go home the same day, but many patients prefer to stay overnight.
When you return home, it is important to avoid strenuous activity. All dressings should remain in place and untouched for one week until your check-up appointment. You will need to take approximately two weeks off work and, ideally, there should be someone there to look after you for the first week. Most patients can return to light exercise after four to six weeks.
The results of a breast reduction are often seen immediately after the procedure. They are also permanent, although it is possible your breasts may change shape naturally over the years. Weight fluctuations could also cause the breasts to enlarge again over time.
Mr Horlock will provide full aftercare instructions to speed up recovery and minimise complications.
+ What are the risks and complications?
Generally speaking, breast reduction surgery is considered a low-risk procedure. However, it is possible you may experience the following:
Fat necrosis is one of the rarest complications, causing hard lumps underneath the skin. It will usually resolve itself over time, but it can lead to issues with the aesthetics of the breast. It is also uncommon to experience changes in sensation of the skin around the nipple, though it can happen.
You will learn more about your individual risk factors when you undergo a consultation with Mr Horlock. He will be able to ease your concerns and answer any questions you may have about the procedure.
