There are many reasons why you might decide to have your breast implants removed and Mr Nigel Horlock has a great deal of experience in this procedure. He often combines this with other cosmetic breast procedures to achieve the optimal aesthetic result.
Breast implants can typically last between 10 and 15 years. However, you may decide you don’t actually want them that long and you want to return to your previous breast size. You may also be worried about the safety of the implants. If you decide for whatever reason that you no longer want your breast implants, they can be removed.
A breast implant removal is a straightforward process though there are some risks and complications to be aware of. Below, you will learn more about the procedure, what it involves and the things you can expect when you undergo it.
+ What is breast implant removal?
A breast implant removal simply removes the implant without replacing it. It takes around one to two hours to complete and will be carried out under general anaesthetic.
An incision will be made in approximately the same place as the original one during the breast augmentation surgery. This is done to avoid any additional new scarring. The implants will then be removed before the wound is stitched up. A dressing will be placed over the wound to protect against infection and aid in healing.
For most women though, Mr Nigel Horlock may need to perform further surgery to reshape the breast to produce the optimal results. In some cases, a breast uplift is also performed alongside the breast implant removal. This can help to improve the aesthetics and reduce the likelihood of dropping. Fat transfer involves taking fat from another area of the body and inserting it into the breast to produce a more natural breast enhancement.
+ Am I an ideal candidate?
If you are fit and healthy and simply don’t want implants anymore, you are an ideal candidate for the surgery. It is also a good option for those coming to the end of their implant’s lifespan or those experiencing complications.
If you are looking to have new implants inserted, you will need a breast implant removal and replacement procedure.
+ What results can I expect from a breast implant removal procedure?
The results you will experience will depend upon the size of the implants being removed and the amount of breast tissue left over. Scar tissue can also impact results, and you may not see full results until after a year.
+ What is the recovery like after breast implant removal?
You will usually return home the same day as the surgery. Occasionally patients may need to stay overnight for observation. You will want to take it easy for a week or two and sitting upright can help to minimise any swelling.
It is advisable to take at least one week off work and expect to return to normal activities within four to six weeks. You will also find it more comfortable to wear loose-fitting clothing while you recover.
As additional scarring is avoided, you should notice excellent results from a breast implant removal procedure. Each patient will recover at a different rate and Mr Horlock will be able to advise you of the aftercare and recovery you can expect.
+ What are the risks and complications?
It is important to note that there are very few risks and complications associated with breast implant removal. That being said, the following can sometimes occur:
Pain and swelling are to be expected, though you shouldn’t experience as much as when you had the implants inserted. Another potential complication to be aware of is that the scar could become more prominent. Placing the scarring over the original scar can make it much more noticeable, while also posing a risk of a delay in healing.
